3G Routers
on Jun 28 in Shoot It Live tagged 3g, cradlepoint, crt-500, phs-300, router, tekkeon, wft by martinWhen we started Shoot It Live 2008, there were no battery powered 3G routers available on the Nordic market. In the US there were several devices on the market with the Mi-Fi from Verizon getting the most attention. We tried many different 3G routers, which we ordered online from US, and many smart phones with different router software installed. But no router or solution lived up to our very high demand of simplicity. That was until we got in contact with Cradlepoint and started to test their PHS-300 router.
Read the case study of how Shoot It Live customers use Cradlepoint products here
We started to promote and resell Cradlepoint PHS-300 routers to our customers and later on the Cradlepoint CTR-500 equipped with a Tekkeon external battery. The CTR-500 has a Ethernet port, which is great on locations with a lot of wireless signals, and the Tekkeon battery as it get you more than 5.5 hour of juice.
Shoot It Live is often used on locations were there’s no open Wi-Fi network available. And often were there is a press wi-fi network available on places such as sport arenas or TV studios there’s very often problems with the connection. The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signals can easily get shaky and especially on locations with many wireless signals – which usually is the case on big, broadcasted sports events. That’s why a press photographer that needs to live publish photos can’t rely on those connections all the time.
Another problem connecting to these press wi-fi network is that they usually are open (no encryption) and redirect a user to a web page to login. The problem is that the cameras don’t have a built in browser, which makes it impossible to use services like that. We hope this will change when the camera manufactures implement support for WISPr XML so devices without a browser still let’s the user enter login and password.
As many other in the industry we hope that the next generation of wi-fi transmitters from the camera manufactures will hold a sim card slot.
Royal Wedding Statistics

Over 25 sites was using Shoot It Live to display live photo feeds, and most sites displayed the player on the landing page, which of course generates a lot of traffic. Our cooperation with Scanpix was a success and we hope to offer similar services in the future.

Shoot It Live delivered the live photo feed to The Swedish Royal Court
And in regards to traffic – it was huge!
We have since last Friday pushed out over 60 TB data. That’s 60.000 GigaByte data, consisting of small jpeg images with an average size of 30 KiloBytes each. At the same time we had over 1.7 billion requests (1,704,897,046 HTTP Requests)
In addition to all the photo feeds from the Royal wedding, both Aftonbladet, Politiken and Ekstra Bladet were using Shoot It Live from the World Cup in South Africa.
Videoplaza ads
Aftonbladet also ran ads in the Shoot It Live player for the first time. Since April Shoot It Live supports Videoplaza Monetizer and can show ads as preroll, mideroll or overlay. And because it’s Videoplaza, it’s smart, beautiful and outstanding. I do not know whether or not Aftonbladet or Videoplaza want to go out with statistics on ads served, but I know it was a huge amount.
Among the +25 sites that used Shoot It Live during the weekend there were sites in Germany, Finland, France, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Shoot It Live in Computer Sweden
on Jun 21 in Shoot It Live tagged by martinLast Friday, we received a visit from Marcus Jerräng (@blisk) for an article in Computer Sweden and now it has been published!

The title reads “The Royal Wedding a boost for Swedish IT company” and now, two days after the wedding, it feels undeniably like a huge boost (more on that in a later post).
The article is very comprehensive and explains in detail what we are doing, what customers we have and our next step. We think it’s a brilliant article and a very good summary of the benefits with Shoot It Live. Thanks for a great article Marcus!

Live photos from the royal wedding
on Jun 09 in Shoot It Live tagged bröllop, Kronprinsessbröllopet, Royal Wedding, Scanpix by martinNewspapers has been preparing for the royal wedding on June 19th for quite some time
Many newspapers are concerned about how they should have enough time to produce and publish materials. And when it comes to quickly publish photos during the day, many wonder if the 3G network will crash. Some have experimented with 4G dongles and netbooks to quickly send photos and other attempts to gain access to business buildings and apartments with solid Internet connections close of the wedding events. But hey, now there is a solution!
Through an exclusive partnership with Shoot It Live Scanpix now offers a live photo feed to international and Swedish customer sites. Scanpix will have about 40 photographers on location, access to fixed Internet connections in several locations, and unique access to a number of places. As soon as the photographers send a photo it will automatically be pushed out to all sites that bought the live photo feed from Scanpix.

Shoot It Live – part of Aftonbladet’s Super Live
on Mar 15 in Shoot It Live tagged Aftonbladet.se, guld, OS, rekord, Super Live, Usain Bolt by martin

Aftonbladet launched Super Live during the final of Melodifestivalen, where visitors were met by a new landing page with live photos, live web-TV, chat, tweets and live reporting
The Shoot It Live player, which has a customized menu for Aftonbladet, was placed in the Super Lives peak. The first photo was taken at 19:32 and the last picture from the afterparty was shot and published at 04:06 in the morning. 454 photos in total were published on Aftonbladet.se with an average delay of 34 seconds from photo moment until the photo’s publication.
- Super Live was a good case forward and I liked that (as expected) was using off-the-shelf coveritlive. I mostly liked that they pushed out the photos and texts without the need to refresh the browser, says it-personality Joakim jardenberg on his blog http://jardenberg.se
- Awesome reporting from the Globe arena! Great live TV with Josefine Sundström, Bert Karlsson and everyone else! Super fast photos, says Aftonbladet editor Jan Helin on his blog http://blogg.aftonbladet.se/janhelin
Shoot It Live likes to emphasize the Aftonbladet photographer and Årets Bild prizewinner Andreas Bardell, who used Shoot It Live from World Cup in Berlin last summer and became the first photographer in the world to publish photos of Usain Bolt’s world record in the 200m. During the Olympics in Canada Bardell and Aftonbladet.se became the first in the world to publish photos of Marit Bjørgen, Charlotte Kalla and Bjorn Ferry’s Olympic gold races.
- With Shoot It Live I can focus on doing what I do best. It gives me a great advantage against our competitors. Three times I have been the first photographer in the world to publish photos from major championships. To be able to repeat the success with my photo’s of Usain Bolt last summer, not once but twice in one day feels like I took gold in live publishing, says Andreas Bardell, Photographer at Aftonbladet.
- We are extremely happy and proud to be part of Aftonbladet’s Super Live, and all publications of live photos from world records and Olympic golds. This is another example of how Shoot It Live is being used to quickly and easily live publish photos directly to the web, said Martin Levy, Founder and CEO Voogly AB.

Wow, it’s live – Aftonbladet SuperLive
on Mar 13 in Shoot It Live tagged by martin
Aftonbladet launches SuperLive – a new way to follow the events live
Imagine that you are watching Melodifestivalen tonight – with your notebook in your lap. While Pernilla Wahlgren is on the scene, you have plenty of other back channels started.
You follow the twitter stream, watch live photo slide shows, hanging on behind the stage where the next artist is getting ready. Super Live has its own program manager who guides you where SVT’s cameras do not reach, you’re on the heels of our live-bloggers who have an eye from below, above and outside the loop.
Total here and now – on a single screen.
The premiere takes place tonight at 19.30. And if you then go into aftonbladet.se you’re greeted by a brand new start page.
- Now we combine everything at the same place where we get a massive reader involvement. It becomes something entirely different than sitting on the couch and watch TV. Every time something big happens Super Live is going to be there, says Andreas Aspegren acting site manager. Read more.

GOLD in live publishing
on Mar 03 in Shoot It Live tagged Canada, guld, livebildextra, OS, Vancouver by eivind
Andreas Bardell, gold in live publishing
- With Shoot It Live I can focus on doing what I do best. It gives me a great advantage against our competitors. Three times I have been the first photographer in the world to publish photos from major championships. To be able to repeat the success with my photo’s of Usain Bolt last summer, not once but twice in one day feels like I took gold in live publishing!
First came Charlotte Kalla then came Björn Ferry
The 31 year old Björn Ferry from Storuman advanced from a eighth place and was able to take a Olympic gold with a 16.5-second lead.
Aftonbladet’s photographer Andreas Bardell was once again in the right place at the right time and was able to live publish photos to Aftonbladet.se during the race.
Andreas used Shoot It Live for the first time in the summer of 2009 during the World Cup in Berlin, where he was the first photographer in the World to publish photos of Usain Bolts world record of 200m. During the first days of the Olympics in Canada, he was able to repeat this. Not once but twice did he become the first photographer to publish photos from the gold medal race and of the Swedish Olympic heroes. Photos that have already become part of the sporting history.
