3G Routers

When we started Shoot It Live 2008, there were no battery powered 3G routers available on the Nordic market. In the US there were several devices on the market with the Mi-Fi from Verizon getting the most attention. We tried many different 3G routers, which we ordered online from US, and many smart phones with different router software installed. But no router or solution lived up to our very high demand of simplicity. That was until we got in contact with Cradlepoint and started to test their PHS-300 router.

We started to promote and resell Cradlepoint PHS-300 routers to our customers and later on the Cradlepoint CTR-500 equipped with a Tekkeon external battery. The CTR-500 has a Ethernet port, which is great on locations with a lot of wireless signals, and the Tekkeon battery as it get you more than 5.5 hour of juice.

Shoot It Live is often used on locations were there’s no open Wi-Fi network available. And often were there is a press wi-fi network available on places such as sport arenas or TV studios there’s very often problems with the connection. The 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signals can easily get shaky and especially on locations with many wireless signals – which usually is the case on big, broadcasted sports events. That’s why a press photographer that needs to live publish photos can’t rely on those connections all the time.

Another problem connecting to these press wi-fi network is that they usually are open (no encryption) and redirect a user to a web page to login. The problem is that the cameras don’t have a built in browser, which makes it impossible to use services like that. We hope this will change when the camera manufactures implement support for WISPr XML so devices without a browser still let’s the user enter login and password.

As many other in the industry we hope that the next generation of wi-fi transmitters from the camera manufactures will hold a sim card slot. When we started Shoot It Live 2008, there were no battery powered 3G routers available on the Nordic market. Shoot It Live delivered the live photo feed to The Swedish Royal Court

Shoot It Live delivered the live photo feed to The Swedish Royal Court

Shoot It Live hit a record in use during the Royal Wedding
Over 25 sites was using Shoot It Live to display live photo feeds, and most sites displayed the player on the landing page, which of course generates a lot of traffic. Our cooperation with Scanpix was a success and we hope to offer similar services in the future.

And in regards to traffic – it was huge!
We have since last Friday pushed out over 60 TB data. That’s 60.000 GigaByte data, consisting of small jpeg images with an average size of 30 KiloBytes each. At the same time we had over 1.7 billion requests (1,704,897,046 HTTP Requests)

In addition to all the photo feeds from the Royal wedding, both Aftonbladet, Politiken and Ekstra Bladet were using Shoot It Live from the World Cup in South Africa.

Videoplaza ads
Aftonbladet also ran ads in the Shoot It Live player for the first time. Since April Shoot It Live supports Videoplaza Monetizer and can show ads as preroll, mideroll or overlay. And because it’s Videoplaza, it’s smart, beautiful and outstanding. I do not know whether or not Aftonbladet or Videoplaza want to go out with statistics on ads served, but I know it was a huge amount.

Among the +25 sites that used Shoot It Live during the weekend there were sites in Germany, Finland, France, Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

Shoot It Live in Computer Sweden

Computer Sweden

Last Friday, we received a visit from Marcus Jerräng (@blisk) for an article in Computer Sweden and now it has been published!

The title reads “The Royal Wedding a boost for Swedish IT company” and now, two days after the wedding, it feels undeniably like a huge boost (more on that in a later post).

The article is very comprehensive and explains in detail what we are doing, what customers we have and our next step. We think it’s a brilliant article and a very good summary of the benefits with Shoot It Live. Thanks for a great article Marcus!

Live photos from the royal wedding

Posted by on Wednesday, June 9th, 2010 in News Tags: , , ,

Newspapers has been preparing for the royal wedding on June 19th for quite some time
Many newspapers are concerned about how they should have enough time to produce and publish materials. And when it comes to quickly publish photos during the day, many wonder if the 3G network will crash. Some have experimented with 4G dongles and netbooks to quickly send photos and other attempts to gain access to business buildings and apartments with solid Internet connections close of the wedding events. But hey, now there is a solution!

Through an exclusive partnership with Shoot It Live Scanpix now offers a live photo feed to international and Swedish customer sites. Scanpix will have about 40 photographers on location, access to fixed Internet connections in several locations, and unique access to a number of places. As soon as the photographers send a photo it will automatically be pushed out to all sites that bought the live photo feed from Scanpix.
